If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch Selena Gomez’s documentary My Mind and Me. We’d encourage you to do it because it is an experience you don’t want to miss out on. This film is a raw, emotional, and beautiful work of art. Selena allows viewers to take a close look into her life and her struggles with mental health, along with her drive to show others who might be experiencing the same thing that they’re not alone.

Fans of Selena can see a different side of her when watching this film. Watching her explain her experience with mental health and seeing the toll it took on her emotionally and mentally shows how strong she is and her compassion for others. A scene that stood out to me while I was watching is when Selena discusses her goals to educate others on mental health so that they can learn how to help themselves and others. She has even created a charity The Rare Impact Fund which is providing resources, knowledge, and support to individuals and their mental health.

This documentary gives us a little more about Selena’s life and how growing up in the industry from a young age has changed her life. We’ve all grown up with her, whether watching her on Barney and her friends or Disney Channel. And now, watching her through this documentary has been a groundbreaking experience. How could we imagine that our idols, as well as Selena, were going through personal problems when they always gave their best? There is no easy scene to process in the documentary, even from the beginning, seeing her pain and desperation for wanting to do her best. Her strength to get ahead of her is surprising and worthy of admiration since having a diagnosis of bipolarity and lupus. However, she teaches us that there is always a way to move forward, and the important thing is that we know these issues. Her advocacy is beyond the documentary, and in all the organizations she seeks to contribute, all those talks and resources to learn about mental health. It’s hard to watch this documentary and not have any emotion for everything she’s going through. She is not only a girl who came out of Disney; she is someone like you and me who struggles daily. She keeps going, and I hope this documentary pushes you to keep going too.
