It’s official. After winning over festival audiences and garnering buzz with its Sundance Film Festival debut, the Jennifer Lopez led remake of Kiss of the Spiderwoman has officially been picked up by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate and LD Entertainment and is slated to be released in theaters later this fall. The movie musical is directed by Bill Condon who notably directed the 2006 film adaptation of Dreamgirls to award season gold. Whether or not Condon will be able to repeat the success of Dreamgirls this award season we’ll have to wait and see, but if a fall release date is any indication, it seems that the studio has enough faith in the film to give it an awards season push.

The 2025 remake also stars Tonatiuh as Molina, a gay prisoner during a 1980s Argentine dictatorship. Molina keeps his cellmate Valentin (played by Diego Luna) alive with stories of favorite movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and its actress Ingrid Luna. Jennifer Lopez, long a star of the big screen herself, takes on the role of Ingrid in the film. Both Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna also serve as the film’s Executive Producers.

Kiss of the Spider Woman was originally a novel, written by Manuel Puig and published in 1976. It was first adapted for the big screen in 1985. The 1985 film starred William Hurt, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, José Lewgoy and Milton Gonçalves with William Hurt winning an Academy Award for his performance.

Kiss of the Spiderwoman would also become adapted for the stage as well and would become an iconic Broaway musical. The original 1993 Broadway production won 7 Tony Awards, including Best Actress in a Musical for its star, the late Latina legend Chita Rivera who played the role of Aurora/Ingrid.

Will Kiss of the Spiderwoman once again win over audiences and “Do Miracles” or will its deadly kiss leave audiences shunning yet another Hollywood musical adaptation? We’ll find out as the final song says, “Only in the Movies.”
