The New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF) is set to honor actress Michelle Rodriguez with its Impact Award in recognition of her influential legacy and representation of Latinos in film.
For decades, Michelle Rodriguez has redefined what it means to be a Latina in Hollywood. Her impressive filmography includes The Fast and Furious franchise, Widows, Avatar, Dungeons & Dragons, Resident Evil, Machete, Girlfight and more.
NYLFF will also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Rodriguez’s film, Girlfight with a special screening of the film, featuring a reunion with the cast and director. The film told the tale of a troubled Brooklyn high school student, who decided to channel her aggression by training to become a boxer, despite the disapproval family and prospective trainers, as well as competitors in the male-dominated sport.
Girlfight was released to critical acclaim with Michelle Rodriguez winning for Best Debut Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Since making her film debut in 2000, Michelle Rodriguez has become a box office power house, starring in some of the most successful franchises of all time and redefining Latina representation on screen in the process.
